ABOUT VANDALIA

Vandalia is located in northeast Missouri in Audrain County - 27 miles from the Mississippi River, 30 miles southwest of Hannibal and 100 miles northwest of St. Louis. The Gateway Western railroad line runs through the town.

Col. Aaron McPike, who founded Vandalia in 1874, called Vandalia "Queen of the Prairie". Vast rolling prairies had underlying coal and refractory types of clay. Brickplants are major employers in Audrain County today.

Vandalia is a very livable community--agri-business and industry are well balanced. Vandalians work hard and like to play hard too. Four city parks offer a variety of activities including swimming, picnicking, tennis on two lighted courts and basketball. Vandalia youth league softball, baseball and soccer teams utilize three ballfields during the summer and an eight lane bowling alley, cable tv and a twin cinema provide year-round recreation for all ages. Hunting and fishing grounds and game are plentiful in the area. Northeast Missouri's most notable recreation area--"Mark Twain Lake"--is located just 30 minutes from Vandalia.
